Hello everyone đź‘‹
We’re excited to share that WebXR support is now live across both Mattercraft and Designer. This update gives creators a stable, browser-based world tracking option on Android devices without relying on Instant Apps. It offers a smoother user flow, more predictable performance, and a more client-friendly launch journey.
For some time, our world tracking workflow has leaned on App Clips for iOS and Instant Apps for Android to tap into native ARKit and ARCore tracking. With Google retiring Instant Apps and creators reporting that the Instant App handoff was not ideal for client work, we needed a better long-term path.
WebXR now fills that gap.
WebXR lets Android users access ARCore-powered world tracking directly in the browser. There is no app installation step and no Instant App jump. Experiences enter a fully immersive mode and stay within Chrome. WebXR also supports features Instant Apps weren't capable of, including simpler sharing, in-browser video recording, and a more intuitive journey for end users.
WebXR world tracking is now the default for all new world-tracked templates on Android. Designers and developers can expect the same stability previously provided by Instant Apps, now with a cleaner delivery method.
A few platform notes:
App Clips remain available for iOS, and they continue to be selectable within trigger settings.
World tracking templates have been updated to use WebXR on Android by default. Existing projects can now adopt the new workflow by updating to the latest version of the @zcomponent/zappar-three dependency and placing the required WebXR initialisation snippet at the top of index.ts. This mirrors the approach shown in our launch examples and keeps the workflow simple for ongoing development.
A full “What’s New” entry inside Mattercraft explains the setup steps, whether starting fresh or updating older projects.
Designer now includes a global toggle for WebXR (under the world tracking settings). It is on by default for all world tracking templates and for the blank world-tracked scene. For existing projects, simply head to the global settings, turn on WebXR and publish. This gives creators a straightforward path to stable world tracking while keeping the no-code workflow intact.
App Clips remain available as a separate iOS-only enhancement.
You can explore WebXR support right now by scanning the QR code below or by opening any world-tracked project in Mattercraft or Designer. New templates have it enabled automatically.
Existing projects require a quick update step.
We are looking forward to seeing how this improves client pitches, project reliability, and mobile user experience.
